Being a resident in North America, where the starlings are not that colorful, I was amazed at the starlings in Africa while on a safari a few years ago. Many of the photos I took, such as this Hildebrandt's starling, became paintings later. The bright green background was chosen to contrast the various colors in the bird. The delicate white victorian motif gives the painting more movement and interest, and contrasts the solid forms in the painting. A palimpsest of collage material lies underneath everything.
