Birds in art can be appreciated on many levels… on one level, the beauty of an individual bird species, their traits or intelligence or endurance… on another level, they can be seen symbolically as intermediaries or messengers between heaven and earth, or be part of a culture’s myths and stories. Because of their migration, I also began to think of them as a metaphor for the journey in life, and frequently tie in navigational terms, phrases, or diagrams.
