When I begin a new painting, at times I prefer to start without having everything planned out. I'll typically begin with a few layers of collage, then proceed to see what inspires me after that, a specific bird or animal, color, etc. So in this case, the crown was added after adding in orange color around the junco, as it just seemed to fit.
