rememoratio
Oil on cradled panel.
Unframed. Cradled panel sides are finished with a clear varnish. Painting is wired and ready to hang.
To begin, the painting title, rememoratio is seen on the side of the rhino. This Latin word is the base for English words like "remembrance." However, the story behind this painting is meant to be obscure.
Rather than presenting a straight-forward narrative, I wanted to challenge the viewer (and myself) with a painting that asks more questions than answers it provides. Some of the elements in this work are (or can be taken) as symbolic, such as the red thread. But overall, the viewer approaching this is free to answer the questions that arise, such as, what are the boxes, and what do they mean? Are they empty? Was something in them? What are the birds doing?
The viewer's life experiences will ultimately shape and provide answers, and in the event of a dialogue, will create a richer story with deeper layers than I could imagine.
